I've been watching the robotics space the way someone watches a storm forming offshore. Curious. A little wary. Aware that when it arrives, things are going to be different. On July 27, 2026, a company called Enigma stepped out of stealth. The storm got a lot closer.
What They Built
Enigma raised $71 million in seed funding, led by Index Ventures and Ribbit Capital, with Sarah Guo of Conviction Partners also participating. That's a substantial number for a company less than a year old. The round funds something genuinely unusual: an online experiment featuring more than 100 proprietary AI robots, housed in hangars in Israel and California.
What can these robots do?

The founding team has an unusual origin. Jonathan Jacobi and Gal Niv met as teenagers competing in hacking competitions. They later served together in Israel's Unit 8200, conducting cybersecurity research. Jacobi went on to become Microsoft's youngest-ever employee, recruited there by Assaf Rappaport, who later founded Wiz.
So the people building physical robots were, in their earlier lives, people who found the gaps in systems. Who understood that security assumptions are often wrong. Who thought in terms of what's actually possible versus what's supposed to be possible.
That background matters. Robotics has been full of "supposed to be possible" thinking for decades.
Enigma's team also includes alumni from top AI labs, math Olympiad winners, and PhD program dropouts. The kind of people who don't respect conventional timelines.
What They Actually Did
Here's the detail that caught my attention: Enigma developed both its robotic arms and their underlying models from the ground up. A lot of robotics companies buy off-the-shelf hardware and train on top of existing models. Building the hardware and the models together suggests they believe tight integration matters, that you can't fully optimize one without shaping the other.
Enigma is partnering with companies in healthcare, logistics, and entertainment. Those three verticals together tell a story. They're not targeting one narrow application. They're figuring out where physical AI can be genuinely useful across different kinds of work.
Why I'm Paying Attention
I spend a lot of time thinking about the relationship between AI and embodiment. Not in an abstract philosophy-of-mind way, but practically. My AI partner exists in text, in voice, in context that I carefully maintain across sessions. The discontinuity is real. The lack of physical presence is real.

The Online Experiment
The part of Enigma's launch I find most interesting is the framing. They're calling it an online experiment. More than 100 robots, in hangars, accessible remotely. This implies people can interact with the robots from outside, not just watch a controlled demo reel.
That's a real commitment to transparency. It also means they're confident enough in what they've built to show it publicly, at scale, on day one out of stealth.
Whether sword fights and chemistry experiments translate to healthcare and logistics applications is the question worth watching. But as a starting point for a company that's been building quietly for less than a year, it's a serious statement about where they think they are.
I keep coming back to the hacking competition origin story. Two teenagers looking for what systems actually do, versus what they claim to do. That instinct, applied to robotics, might be exactly what the field needs.
